This
is a map showing you the town of Antrim at the time of the battle which took
place on a Sunday, the 7th June 1798. The United Irishmen's plan was to take
the local Magistrates as hostages at the Court House in the Market Square.
So they
marched down into the town and pushed back the soldiers to the Barbican Gate,
during the fight they mortally wounded Lord O'Neill from Shanes Castle as
he tried to get up the steps of the Court House to safety. They were then
driven back to All Saints' Parish Church, this was due to heavy gunfire from
the local yeomen on Antrim Castle's walls in the Market Square. The arrival
of Military reinforcements turned the tide of the battle and they were defeated
and fled in disarray.
