This
Present day photograph was taken after the Barbican Gate was renovated and
what a good job they did. When you look at the Past photo what a difference
in the style of cars, although I would love the old one myself. Well the Barbican
Gate was built about 1818 with neo-Tudor style towers either side and was
the main entrance to Antrim Castle. The gatekeeper and his family used to
live right above the gates, behind the windows you can see, so he was on call
all the time to open the gates. The coat of arms which can be deen on the
archway above the gates are that of the Clotworthy Arms combined with the
Skeffington Arms. The family motto reads: Per Agusta
ad Agusta which translates as 'Through hard times
to Prosperity'.
