This is the Market Square where from 1665 permission was given for 6 fairs a year. The annual fair was held here and in 1860 a weekly Thursday market was started for the buying and selling of local produce. In 2000 the town relaunched the Thursday weekly market on the original site. A Hiring fair to hire people to work on the farms or in the big houses was also held here twice a year. The building you are looking at was built in 1726 for the sum of £150 and was used as a Court House until 1994, since then it has remained empty but plans are afoot to return it to its former glory by the council.
