This
is all that remains of Antrim Castle, it was destroyed by a fire which started
at the grand staircase during a ball on the 28th October 1922. The castle
was built between 1610 and 1666 and the hexagon tower that remains was built
in 1887. During the fire a servant, Miss Ethel Gillgan aged 22 from Co.Westmeath
was trapped but then rescued from an upstairs window, sadly she died later
due to smoke inhalation. It is said that over the years her ghost has been
seen dressed in white going around the Castle Gardens. The local people call
her ghost 'The White Lady'.
